BIRMINGHAM, UK, Apr 21, 2015 – The latest release of Delcam CRISPIN’s ShoeMaker Pro CAD software for the design of all types of footwear includes special editing tools to adapt an existing sole to a new upper design. The 2015 R2 version also incorporates more efficient tools for upper design, such as edge gimping, stitch-down simulation and a new jewelry library, plus improvements to the KeyShot rendering and the ability to export models in Apple’s iBook Widget format for viewing on iPads and iPhones.

ShoeMaker Pro is the only CAD program for the footwear industry that integrates fully the 3D design of uppers and soles, so allowing the complete 3D CAD model of the shoe to be developed and visualized within a single system. This integrated approach benefits all footwear designers, but is particularly advantageous for companies making sports shoes and other designs that include complex soles.
In ShoeMaker Pro 2015 R2, it has been made easier to take an existing sole design and adapt it to a new upper design. Using an existing sole design can shorten the overall development process, while the new alignment tools make 3D modeling of the shoe quicker and easier.

Two new tools allow the shape of the sole to be edited, either by using the bending tool to match a flat sole to the profile of the upper or by using the box morphing tool to reshape the sole to match the last.
Another new option allows stitch-down construction to be modeled. As with the other stitching options in ShoeMaker, various types of stitching can be trialed, with different stitch sizes and spacing.

The main enhancement to the KeyShot rendering in ShoeMaker is the ability to produce a render of a pair of shoes by mirroring the design automatically to generate the second shoe in the image. Once they have been created, the pair exist as separate models within KeyShot so their positions and coloring can be altered independently. The new version also recognizes any duplicated features in the model, such as a set of eyelets around the lace holes, and treats them as ‘instances’ of the same geometry. This gives a ‘lighter’ model that can be imported into KeyShot, and then moved within it, more quickly.

Delcam is one of the world’s leading suppliers of CAM software and associated services, and also supplies systems for product design, tooling design, reverse engineering and inspection. The company has grown steadily since being founded formally in 1977, after initial development work at Cambridge University led by the late Donald Welbourn. It is now among the largest developers of product design and manufacturing software in the UK, with subsidiaries in America, Europe and Asia. Over 330 people are employed at Delcam’s Birmingham headquarters, with almost 400 staff working in the company’s overseas subsidiaries and around 200 more in its international joint ventures.
Delcam’s software and services help manufacturing companies to increase productivity, improve quality and reduce lead times. The company’s software is used in over 90 countries by more than 45,000 organizations. These customers range from multi-national corporations to independent designers, toolmakers and sub-contractors, and come from a wide variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, electrical appliances, footwear, healthcare, motor sport, packaging, toys, sports equipment, jewelry and signmaking. ShoeMaker is the only footwear CAD program to integrate fully the 3D design of lasts, uppers and soles, so allowing the complete shoe to be developed and visualised in a single system. This integrated approach benefits all footwear designers, but is particularly advantageous for companies making sports shoes and other designs that include complex soles.
The 2014 version offers improved visualisation of designs with the new KeyShot rendering engine, the ability to create lasts for boot designs, more options for heel design, and additional items in the extensive library of accessories supplied with the software.
With the KeyShot rendering software now built in to ShoeMaker, laptops, tablets or smart-phones can be used to show more realistic images of new designs to prospective buyers for styling and marketing reviews. This reduces the need for physical samples, cutting overall costs and shortening product time to market.
Similarly, using more realistic images improves communications between design and manufacturing teams, minimising the chance of errors and again helping to introduce new designs to market more quickly.
Engineer Pro helps users to produce samples and graded footwear patterns for manufacturing in the fastest possible time, whilst also helping to minimise tooling costs. The 2014 version includes a number of enhancements that add ‘intelligence’ to the software, and so make it more intuitive and faster to use.
One of these enhancements can be seen when creating a chain from a series of intersecting lines. Engineer Pro anticipates the chain that the user wants and highlights the potential chain as the cursor hovers over a line. A single click accepts the chain, making the process very quick.
This ‘quick chain’ action is also part of the ‘constrained’ functions, including adding markers, stabs and decorative features, making these processes much faster too. In addition, in appropriate circumstances, features added this way can now be mirrored automatically across a boundary having a mirror axis.
The single-click command for creating boundaries that was introduced in the 2013 release of Engineer Pro now uses ‘intelligence’ to determine the function to use. Clicking on a line leads the program to use the line-by-line process to make a boundary. Alternatively, clicking in a closed area allows the user to accept the boundary created automatically for that area or to add adjacent areas and then accept a combined boundary.
Once the desired boundary is defined, edge details (allowances and so on) can be added around the part simply by dragging and dropping treatments from the library of edge templates.

Another time-saving enhancement is the ability to add a small radius at all intersections in a boundary or within a number of boundaries with a single click. Adding these radii, in place of sharp corners, speeds up subsequent cutting operations using single-point cutting systems.
